Saturday, June 4 :: Dinner Out At Montmartre
Today we ventured out of the house to go see open houses again in NW DC. It seems that everything is so expensive and the houses are quite little that are near the good schools. Mommy and Daddy decided that they should go out to eat and that we should all do this outside. There is a lovely cafe nearby called Montmartre. I had a chair all to myself and sat so patiently in my car seat while mom and dad had a pretty leisurely dinner-- they even stayed for coffee and dessert! This was the day that mommy graduated from High School 16 years ago! I heard her talking to Daddy about it.
Tuesday, June 7 :: Uh-Oh
Today I put wormie in my mouth. This was no random event. I grabbed my stuffed "wormie" --really a Lamaze cloth toy-- and tried to put it in my mouth. Mommy was not amused, but was surprised that I could do this. I had to show her that I could hold it in place too; I held wormie up to my mouth for over 4 minutes, not that Mommy was counting or anything. :) Oh, the other thing that I have started doing, and I guess it makes my parents pretty happy, is sleeping through the night. Once I get down about midnight, it seems that I have no trouble sleeping until 7:00 am. I think I saw mommy do the happy dance. Daddy and I get to spend quality time together when I am trying to fall asleep for the night. Daddy is kind to give Mommy a break. She goes to bed usually around 11:30, sometimes 12:00, but Daddy always puts me down for the night. It is our special time.
Oh yeah. I also learned how to read when Mom wasn't looking...
Thursday, June 9 :: The Laugh and The Coo
I laughed and I cooed today! This happened on my changing table, of course. I love to stretch and play there, so it was only natural that that is where I first laughed and cooed.
Sunday, June 12 :: The Country Club Brunch and Fair Oaks Mall
I turned 8 weeks old yesterday!
Today Mommy and Daddy wanted to spend an early Father's Day with Grandad Palmer since we are going to be in New Jersey for Father's Day. So, to celebrate, we went to International for brunch. We got there about noon and just as mommy and daddy arrived back at the table with their hot meals (it was a buffet), I decided that I needed to eat RIGHT AWAY. The pacifier did not do. Mommy went downstairs to the ladies club room to feed me, and I was in my pretty smocked dress so it was a little challenging to not get myself all wet. Mommy then brought
a happy baby back up to the table. Then there was a big diaper that Aunt Traci volunteered to clean up and when I got back to the table, I had VERY red eyes from crying so hard. Anyway, we went out to the pool eventually, to say hi to the Wrobels and see Madison swim, but things got a little carried away and I got a little overheated. By the time we finally left the club, it was 4:00. Then, of all things, Mommy and Daddy decided we had to go to the Mall to get some Fathers Day cards. I did the best I could but I think it got a little too much for me. I was up until 2 am and daddy held me all night long in the rocking chair. And Mommy slept on the floor in my nursery since she did not want to leave Daddy on his own. The both of them are so first time parents, aren't they?
Monday, June 13 :: I Think I Gave Mommy a Back Ache
Since Mommy slept on the floor last night, I saw her having a hard time walking this morning. I think she has me to thank for that. I know that Dad said she should go to bed, but she kept on sleeping on the floor anyway, in solidarity. Daddy and Mommy are so good at keeping me happy that I rarely ever have to cry to get my way. Hopefully, I didn't do any long-term damage to Mom. She needs to be able to play with me when I can run around (which shouldn't be too long!!).
Thursday, June 16 :: My Two-Month Doctor's Visit
Today we woke up early so that I could go get my 2 month shots. We got to Dr. Biernoff's office right on time! Mommy and Daddy gave me a funny tasting medicine this morning and it made me make funny faces. I pushed half of it out with my tongue. Mommy was worried about me running something called a fever. It turns out that I weigh 11 pounds, 13 ounces, my head is 39 cm, and I am 24 1/2 inches long. Mommy thought that I would weigh more than that, but the doctor said I was doing beautifully. She told mommy and daddy that they could relax a little and slack off a bit as parents, that they didn't have to be so perfect. I thought I saw Mommy smile when the doctor said that, but I couldn't really tell since Daddy was holding me so tight.
Daddy held me when I got my three shots in my thighs. Mommy and Dr Biernoff left the room because they were both teary-eyed. (Actually I am being polite to Mommy, as I could hear her sobbing from behind the door! Why is she crying since I am the one getting the shots?) I was OK after the shots except for a little while that I was really sore and it hurt. Daddy came home from work a little early to help take care of Mommy (and me). We went at night to get a big box from the Post Office, and we went out to dinner at the new Thai place on the Hill. Mommy and Daddy didn't eat dinner until after 10pm! The big box was full of clothes for me from Uncle Chris and Aunt Jenn.....how nice of them to send me more clothes!
Poppy and Grammy called to see how I am doing. It seems that I am running a fever, but the stupid thermometer didn't work so Mommy did not know how high it got. She woke up every hour all night long to test my head. It finally broke around 3 am and mommy finally got some sleep, knowing I was OK.
June 18 :: Our Big Trip to New Jersey
Today we took my first long car trip to NJ. It actually was a lot less eventful than the parents thought it would be. We took 2 hours to get out of the house this morning, and that was even after mommy and daddy got everything packed and organized the night before! Geesh, how slow those adults are! We got to grandma O's house about 3:30 -- after mommy had to feed me in the parking lot at a NJ turnpike rest stop -- and we all had to rush back out of the house to get to see a man named Ira who took our Honda Civic in as a trade in. Grandaddy O got a new CRV today and Mommy signed over the title of the car to the same place that she bought it, 12 years ago to the month! Mommy pondered for a while how much had changed in the 12 years since she and Daddy (and Grandaddy) had gone over to see Ira to buy her first car, the Civic that she traded in today. In those 12 years, mommy lived overseas in New Zealand (where my stroller is from), mommy and daddy got married, bought a house, and got new jobs! And of course, the biggest thing--I came along.
Anyway, Mom and Dad got a new car for me...my Grandparents' '99 CRV. It is a lot easier to get into. Mommy and Daddy are so thankful that Grandma and Grandaddy are so good to us. But they have to get used to driving an automatic car again! But Mommy was OK with closing that chapter behind us, and we are excited to go back to DC with a fully functioning car.
We are spending the weekend with the Grandparents, and Teti Gum and Aunt Shannon are sooooo excited to see me again! They are coming over for dinner tonight. Grandaddy set up my new pack-n-play in mommy's old bedroom - and of course it fits and looks great! I am going to sleep all night tonight to show them that I can adapt easily to NJ.
Tomorrow we are going to Aunt Shannon and Uncle Rob's to see their brand new finished basement.
June 20 :: Daddy Plays Golf, Mommy Goes to Costco
It was so funny today - Grandma O and Mommy were alone taking care of me when Daddy and Grandaddy played in the golf tournament honoring my Uncle Ed. Mommy and Grandma went to Babies R Us to return some things I did not need, and to buy my friend Alexandra a birthday present. I got hungry though and needed to eat, so in a scramble (since there were a lot of bags and things), Mommy changed me and fed me in the lounge. Thank goodness Grandma was there to lend mommy a hand with all the stuff. We then went to Costco and, since I refused to burp, I spit up all over myself in the cart. Mommy had to change me in the cart! How embarassing that I was naked right there in Costco. Thank goodness Mommy tried to hurry. I guess that I completely exhausted the two of them, since they were so tired that night. Auntie Shannon came again at lunchtime to see me one more time before I went back home to DC. And Teti Gum came again and had dinner with Mommy and Grandma and me one last time. We took her over to see two pretty houses in Dunellen that mommy really likes. Daddy and Grandaddy got home about 10pm and Daddy had won a nice golf shirt for the longest drive-- ha ha, get it?
The picture of me and Grandma shows me doing my first Cassandra dance! Grandma put me up on the kitchen table and made me do an old-fashioned dance called the "moonwalk." Anyway, apparently I raise my feet and kick a little bit and it makes all the adults around me laugh. We did this dance several times and mommy just loves it. So does Grandma. I overheard the adults saying that the socks make the dance all the more adorable.
We're going home tomorrow in the morning.
June 21 :: Trouble Getting Out of the Gate
We're not going home this morning.
I saw to that. I don't want to leave the Grandparents' house. Mommy and Daddy were all set to go about 10am, but I had to eat again and better to do it before we left than again in the car. Well.....I spit up, and of course, all over Mommy, who had to get changed and then change me. Daddy burped and burped me, but to no avail. This would happen two more times. Mommy knows that she should be a little concerned, but she looks just too tired. Daddy wanted to stop in Philly to see our family there, but it does not look like that is possible either, since we can't seem to get out of the house. Besides, Auntie Denni and Uncle Paul are on their way to VA, so we couldn't even go to Philly if we wanted to. Mommy cooked dinner for the GPs, and we finally got on the road about 7:15pm.
Car ride went fine; I ate several times on the way home. When we got in about 11:15pm, I stopped crying as soon as I got up the stairs that lead to my room. When I got into my room, I looked all around -- I remembered all of my stuff! I went to bed right on time, too.
June 22 :: I Meet Some of the Philly Contingent
I met Aunt Denni and Paul and Cousin Andrew today out at Grandma and Grandpa Palmers' house. Cousin Maddi was there too. I didn't get much chance to say hello and stuff since I was a little cranky and wanted to eat a lot. It also took us a little while to get out there (over an hour, actually). Dad and Mom split their time visiting with the rest of the family because I was so insistent on needing a diaper change or feeding while we were at the P's, but at least everyone was together briefly for a good meal (they got food from Glory Days). The weather was getting kind of warm, so we didn't spend any time outside in this visit. Cousin Maddi was so excited to see me and it was nice to see how enthusiastic she was. I can tell that we're going to have fun together when I get a little older.
June 25, 2005 :: 10 WEEKS! Our First Visit to a Museum
I'm 10 weeks old today!!! Mom and Dad are so proud and can't believe that I'm already this old... I heard Dad say that it feels like it's been a lot longer, but Mom knows much more than Dad how true that is. I don't really have a sense of time yet, so I can't really say...
Today Mommy and Daddy were still worried about me not keeping down all my food. So, Mommy dragged me out of bed a little early to see if I ate a little sooner, maybe I wouldn't eat so fast and it all wouldn't come up. Success! Although Mom and Dad are a little sleepier today, at least I've kept Mommy and me dry this morning.
We had a great day visiting Murky Coffee on the Hill, the Post Office, and the Museum of the American Indian. The museum was really cool. Mom and Dad let me see the exhibits from the comfort of my new Mountain Buggy stroller fully reclined. I got hungry just as the big theater in the museum emptied, so the whole family sat inside the theater and waited for the movie to start while I ate my lunch. I slept on Mommy during the movie (I have to stay upright after eating, you know, so I don't have my spitting issue) and Mom and Dad got to relax a little and enjoy the "Peoples" movie. By the time the movie finished, the Big People were hungry too since it somehow had gotten to be 3:00. So, they tried out the Cafeteria in the museum after giving me a much needed diaper change. But the Big People made one big mistake -- they only kept me upright for 20 minutes, so whoops! just as daddy was paying for lunch and mommy was balancing her lunch tray in line, I again had a little spit up problem. Mommy leaped to the rescue, and I left the rest of my lunch down Mommy's shirt -- right there in the middle of the cafe! Anyway, I felt really bad since mommy looked like she was about to cry, but alas she did not. Mommy and Daddy managed to eat their lunches while I waited there patiently. They changed me, fed me a little more, then we went off to see some more exhibits in the museum.
One of the highlights of my day was when we left the museum and sat outside on the bench on the Mall for a little while. The heat had finally dissipated somewhat, and I sat on Daddy's lap while mommy stood in the sunshine. I love the smell of fresh air! And the US Capitol is a beautiful sight to behold. Mommy pointed out to me where she worked before I came along, and we enjoyed the nice summer evening.
Daddy got a chance to watch his Nationals again tonight and they won 5-2 against the Bluejays. They are having a remarkable season thus far and done better than anyone expected them too. I even watched a few minutes with him. It's not as boring as Mommy makes it out to be.
I got a bath when I got home since I had gotten all sweaty from being outside. I wore my new pajamas from Teti Gum tonight. For the first time in a long time, I am headed to bed at 7:30 pm. Mommy changed my diaper at 10:30 and I woke up to eat then, but I soon after drifted off to sleep again......
Sunday, June 26 :: Bottle... from Mommy? Watched the Nats Game
I got up today at 7:30 am and had a fairly successful feed. But oh well, for my second feed of the day, I spit up quite a bit. Since my recent routine of losing some of my lunch each time I eat, Mommy has gotten very good at burping me.
And, although I haven't written about it in a while, Daddy has been trying and trying to give me a bottle. I think that he has tried about 15 times. I only took it once, and that was when I was only four weeks old. Since then, I've made it hard on Dad, but he keeps trying anyway. Perhaps I'll eventually give in and let him feed me too... I know that Mommy would really like that since it would let Daddy give her a break.
Monday, June 27 :: Doctor's Again for Weight Check-In...All is Well!
We got up at 6:30 today to go see Dr Lazarov since I was spitting up so much on Friday. Dr Lazarov saw me right on time and told me that I weigh 12 pounds, 6 ounces! Yeah! That means I have gained 9 ounces since my last doctor's visit, when I got my shots 10 days ago. Dr. Lazarov gave me a thorough check up and pronounced me perfectly beautiful. She said that the weight gain has been great, and that there is no reason to worry about the spits as long as I stay my happy self, I gain weight, and I stay well hydrated. We dropped daddy off at work and then Mommy and I went home. Mommy feels much better, I can tell.
We're going to New Jersey again this weekend. This time, we're going to stay for a little while. Mommy wants to spend time with Grandmama O who will be retiring at the end of the week. That way, Daddy can get some rest (ha ha)-- no, really, he is going to work a lot on our house while Mommy and I are away. Then we'll be back home on Capitol Hill by July 15th.
Interestingly, when we got home, Mommy started thinking about the scale at the doctor's office. She thinks that I was really 11 lbs 2 oz the time I went to see Dr Biernoff and that the silly nurse just read the scale and told her that it was 11 lbs 13 oz when it was really reading 11.13 lbs (which is 11 lbs 2 oz). Mommy is going to have to have a chat with the nice staff at the doctor's.
Tuesday, June 28 :: We Try Rice Cereal
I really enjoyed my bath tonight - I kicked and kicked in the warm water, getting mommy and daddy both very wet. It was really fun! Today I spit up 5 times and mommy is beside herself. So tonight we had a little bit of rice cereal. Mommy diluted it so much I could barely taste it, but I guess that was OK for my first feeding.
Wednesday, June 29 :: Rice Cereal from a Cup
All went well until the Oprah show. I decided to spit up then, waaaay after I got rice cereal this morning. Daddy fed me about an ounce, which had about a teaspoon in it. I kept down all my feedings until the 3:30 one. And then I had a little one when daddy changed me about 7pm, but other than that, no other spit ups. I heard mommy on the phone with Dr Lazarov, who said that as I long as I still had wet diapers and was happy, that things are likely going just fine. I think I am putting mommy through a lot right now. She did finally get outside the house though. She went to book club tonight at Sonoma, the same night that the Capitol was evacuated yet again. Mommy and Christine and Sara and Emily discussed The Secret Life of Bees over penne pasta. Dad had the doingsomething board over and everyone cooed over my room. I went down for the night about 11:30 pm.
Thursday, June 30 :: To HHS we go!
Today was really exciting. I got my morning feed of rice cereal (with a little more difficulty), and then daddy put me in a really cute outfit and I went with Mommy to where she works -- HHS. I met all of her nice friends who she also happens to work with. We went to Bill Beldon's retirement party and then visited with Ashley in her new office! Everyone told mommy how smiley I was. Mommy was proud of me for cooperating so well when she fed me in the nurses' office. We got home a lille past noon.
