The concept for the Bistro was ten years in the making. When Frederick Nicholas and Earlé Rands discovered the beauty of the Shenandoah Valley, they were immediately taken by it. Both connoisseurs of fine food and wineNicholas a long-time member of the Wagshal's Gourmet staff in Washington, Rands a lifelong devotee of good food, owing to his French Canadian rootsthey had a dream of opening a restaurant that would marry their talents and loves.
Restoration and Creation
The pair knew they had the perfect site when they found an 1820 farm house in Lost River, West Virginia and set upon creating their dream. Wanting to develop a place where people could feel comfortable and enjoy good food amongst friends, they worked with architects and designers to establish a unique space that exemplified their tastes and preserved the beauty of the historic building.
The First Season Nicholas and Rands opened its doors in September 2001, just weeks after the horrific attacks on the nation. Fortunately, the restaurant was well-received and garnered attention from the community quickly. The duo, based in Washington, had plans to operate the Bistro remotely initially, then gradually move to a full-time operation after a few seasons.
Untimely Departure
Sadly, the team of Nicholas and Rands was struck by tragedy in December when Frederick became ill and was hospitalized near Christmas. Despite tremendous efforts from the hospital's staff, Frederick passed away in mid-March.
A Legacy Continues
Earlé has determined to continue Frederick's dream and operate the Bistro in the manner they both intended. He dedicates the Bistro to the memory of Frederick and appreciates the honor his guests bring to the experience.
