Last fall I discovered a great website about urban life called "The New Colonist," edited by two guys in San Francisco with the noble goal of telling the stories of America's cities. Frustrated that they had not given mention to my town, I asked "Where's Washington?" Next thing I knew, I was developing a feature for the March issue of the webzine. I solicited articles from friends around the city, but also wrote three pieces, included below. You can visit the site at www.newcolonist.com. The "Your Block" section will eventually include a Washington page, which I submitted, but hasn't been updated yet.
NEW! I also now keep a 'blog called "Why I Hate Suburbia" on the blogger site at ihatesuburbia.blogspot.com.

Tired of hearing about exciting new projects and developments coming to "Washington" only to learn they were really setting down in another spoiled suburb, I lashed back. |
How is it that 572,000 Americans can be disenfranchised by the very government that makes a city its adopted home, and still demands that its residents pay them taxes? Wars have started on lesser grounds. |
Try this one on your boss next time you're late: "The President was on the way to Congress, so I couldn't cross the street." Won't work in Schaumburg or Schenectady, but in Washington, no one will question you. |
